Don’t Text and Drive

A friend posted the above image on Facebook. It serves as a great reminder not to text and drive. I live in a state where it is against the law to use your cell while driving–unless you have a hands-free device. Texting while driving is ridiculous and just plain dangerous. Don’t play with your life and the lives of others. The above image might make you chuckle, but think about it. Don’t do something stupid. Be smart. Be safe.

(Book Review) The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life

The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life by James Martin, S.J. (432 pages, HarperOne, 2010) After eleven years spent at Jesuit schools (high school, undergrad, grad school), I thought I had a good grasp on what Ignatian Spirituality consisted of and what the particular charism of the Jesuits was all about. Wrong! Fr. James Martin, once again, has written a gem of a book that is a welcome addition to the canon of contemporary texts of [...]

iPad At The Altar?

Looks like Catholics might soon see iPads at the altar being used by priests during mass. The Associated Press is reporting that an Italian priest has developed an app that will make it easy for priests to access the Roman Missal via iPad. The applications will be offered in several languages and will be free to download. I’ve said time and time again that I love that the Church is reaching out to the masses via new media. I still [...]

I Want A Vuvuzela For My Birthday

Ok, so maybe I don’t. Honestly, I have no idea what I would do with a vuvuzela at home. Annoy the neighbors, perhaps? I guess it would be helpful in that respect. So, why say I want a vuvuzela for my birthday? My point is this: Too much has been made out of a plastic instrument that is part of South African sporting tradition. The world is playing in South Africa’s backyard–home to soccer fans for which the vuvuzela serves [...]

From Fallible Blogma: Is your faith “dumbed down?”

Great post over at Fallible Blogma with a great video featuring Fr. Barron discussing how our culture has “dumbed down” subjects such as literature, philosophy and religion. Check it out:Is your faith “dumbed down?” Matthew Warner says that we have become “dumbed down to anything except technology.” I agree. While I am a huge fan of technology, I also recognize that an increase in technology has also led to a decrease in communication and, quite possibly, one of the leading [...]

Volunteerism Rising

Guess what? Volunteerism is on the rise in the United States. That’s right, even in the midst of the current recession Americans have found ways to give back to their communities, organizations, and people in need. A report issued by the Corporation for National and Community Service found that the number of volunteers rose from 1.6 million to 63.4 million contributing a total more than 100 million hours of service—the largest increase in American volunteer activity since 2003. The amount [...]

Sarah McLachlan is back!

Seven years have passed since the last release of a Sarah McLachlan album. Today, Sarah’s brand new album, “Laws of Illusion,” drops in stores nationwide. The album has been released in regular and deluxe versions. Seven years have not changed Sarah one bit. “Laws of Illusion” is another fine album from an amazing artist. I would have preferred a more stripped down version of the album that would have provided Sarah with a wider canvas with which to let her [...]

FIFA World Cup 2010

There’s something about the World Cup that always excites. It’s more than just the soccer or cheering for one’s country (go USA!). I think I just love seeing how the world comes together to celebrate their team, unite in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship, and takes one month to honor the hard work and dedication of the host country and all the players. Events like the World Cup and the Olympics are a good reminder to celebrate similarities and [...]
