(Music Review) Home for Christmas (2010 edition) – Sheryl Crow

My music collection boasts over 50 Christmas CD’s and a host of Christmas cassettes from the pre-CD era. I love Christmas music and it has become a family tradition, each Christmas, to pick out one family ornament and an unspoken family tradition to pick out a new Christmas album to complement the season. Truly great Christmas albums are hard to come by. It seems that every major recording artist, at some point in their career, will release a Christmas recording. [...]

Giving Thanks – A Reflection

I am thankful for uncertainty. A year ago today, I made a major decision. I resigned from a good position within a well-known industry. It wasn’t an easy decision. In fact, it was a decision that labeled me “crazy” in the eyes of some and cast me towards an uncertain future. Leaving one’s job in the midst of an economic recession doesn’t seem like the right choice for anyone. But, it was for me. The reality of an uncertain future [...]

TAGO Update #1

It’s been an exciting year so far for Through A Glass Onion (TAGO). I’ve moved from having a personal blog to sharing my thoughts and posts with the world. As my interests are varied, I have opened this blog to include a wide variety of my interests. Cementing the true direction of this blog has posed a challenge as I’ve struggled with creating a purely Catholic or literary blog versus a blog about everything. I’m not a one-track mind sort [...]

(Book Review) 13 Words

13 Words by Lemony Snicket (Author) and Maira Kalman (Illustrator) (40 pages, HarperCollins, 2010) Reading Level: Ages 4-8 I rarely read kids’ books, but this one was a gift from a friend due to an inside joke and a mutual appreciation for Lemony Snicket. I read it and I liked it. I liked it very much. 13 Words is not your typical children’s book and definitely not your typical wordbook. Half of the words are ones typically not heard by [...]

2010 was the Year of Austen; 2011 will be the Year of…

It’s poll time! I need your help to select my literary focus for 2011. This year, as some of you may know, I made it a goal to read ALL of Jane Austen’s works by the end of the year. Originally, I had made it a summer project but other required reading got in the way a few times. So, by year’s end I will have read all of Austen’s works, including her unpublished manuscripts, other writings, and letters. Ambitious? [...]

Wouldn’t you LOVE a HAUL-IDAY?

Local publisher Chronicle Books has a holiday contest that is perfect for your dear blogger and her readers. What is it? Well, it’s a contest that is to bibliophiles what candy is to children. That’s right, this involves books…lots of books…up to $500 worth of books! The contest runs from now until December 10, 2010. All I have to do is post Chronicle titles that I want to haul in for my bookshelf and all you have to do is [...]

Random Thoughts: Week of November 1-7, 2010

(1) Watching your hometown baseball team win the World Series brings about indescribable feelings. To anyone who doubted that San Francisco is a baseball city, let this week’s accomplishment be a testament to our faithfulness as fans and our enthusiasm. The city bled orange and black for weeks and the victory parade for the team was unlike anything the city has ever seen. Well done, San Francisco Giants! (2) All politicians, regardless of party, should read “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe [...]

We Are The Champions

Last night marked one of the best moments of my life. The San Francisco Giants won the World Series with a final strikeout. The Beard pitched the last strike, which marked a fitting end to The Freak’s stellar performance for most of the game. And with one last strikeout, the torture of the 2010 season was over in a remarkable way. Not since 1954, had the Giants won a world series. But, this one was special. This was the first [...]

San Francisco Giants Making Their Mark

If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter or have the pleasure to be on my GChat list, you know that I’ve been diligently following and discussing the San Francisco Giants during the month of October. I love baseball and I love the San Francisco Giants. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t. Growing up in a big city where all the males in my family love sports it was hard not to get into it. I remember loving [...]

Agatha Christie at 120

Today marks the 120th birthday anniversary of the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie. In her lifetime, the beloved and internationally-known mystery writer wrote 80 novels and created some of the literary world’s best loved characters. Who has not heard of Miss Marple or Inspector Hercule Poirot at least once? The feisty spinster with her nose for detail and the little Belgian detective with his keen skills of observation are, perhaps, the forerunners of every well-known literary detective in the modern [...]
