San Francisco Giants Making Their Mark

If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter or have the pleasure to be on my GChat list, you know that I’ve been diligently following and discussing the San Francisco Giants during the month of October. I love baseball and I love the San Francisco Giants. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t. Growing up in a big city where all the males in my family love sports it was hard not to get into it. I remember loving [...]

Back-to-School Memories

September always brings back memories of character lunchboxes, 64-color boxes of crayons, pink erasers, and Catholic school uniforms. A recent trip to the local Target took me to the back-to-school section. Parents with school supply lists of required materials and kids with their own ideas of what was needed for school crowded the already crowded section. Spiral wide-ruled notebooks and glue sticks litters the aisles–remainders of a $0.99 school supply sale and last-minute shopping. While observing the parents and their [...]

On the 100th Birthday of Mother Teresa

Today marks the 100th birthday of Mother Teresa, the small Albanian nun who helped open the eyes of the world to the plight of the poor. Her bright smile, her dedication to aiding the suffering, her devotion to God, and her call for justice, love, and peace graced our world until her death in 1997. Mother Teresa called the world to action and in so doing grew her Missionaries of Charity into a worldwide religious order dedicated to caring for [...]

AIDS Walk San Francisco 2010 on Sunday!

AIDS Walk San Francisco (AWSF) 2010 will take place in Golden Gate Park this Sunday, July 18, 2010. Judging by the past few days, the weather should be beautiful for a morning walk followed by afternoon entertainment. Since 1987, AWSF has raised nearly $75 million for the San Franciscio AIDS Foundation and other local Bay Area organizations that are working towards advancements in research and treatment of HIV and AIDS. AIDS affects men, women, AND children. There is no single [...]

Fr. Paul Leo Locatelli, S.J. (1938-2010)

Today, I join with my fellow alums and the entire Santa Clara University community in mourning the passing of a fine Jesuit and a truly wonderful human being. Fr. Paul Leo Locatelli, S.J., affectionately known as “Papa Loc” to the SCU community, passed away this morning after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 71. Fr. Locatelli served the Santa Clara University community for many years, including twenty years as SCU’s president–working towards improvements in academics and raising millions [...]

iPad At The Altar?

Looks like Catholics might soon see iPads at the altar being used by priests during mass. The Associated Press is reporting that an Italian priest has developed an app that will make it easy for priests to access the Roman Missal via iPad. The applications will be offered in several languages and will be free to download. I’ve said time and time again that I love that the Church is reaching out to the masses via new media. I still [...]

I Want A Vuvuzela For My Birthday

Ok, so maybe I don’t. Honestly, I have no idea what I would do with a vuvuzela at home. Annoy the neighbors, perhaps? I guess it would be helpful in that respect. So, why say I want a vuvuzela for my birthday? My point is this: Too much has been made out of a plastic instrument that is part of South African sporting tradition. The world is playing in South Africa’s backyard–home to soccer fans for which the vuvuzela serves [...]

A Song for Good Friday

I can think of no more appropriate a day to share this song than on Good Friday. The song was written by Sarah Hart and is sung by Jesse Manibusan–two very talented Catholic singer/songwriters. This song was one of the inspirations behind my thesis and an aid in reflection since I first heard it. Sarah’s lyrics capture the beauty and intensity of the cross. Christ transforms death on the cross into something beautiful. In the face of suffering, Christ chose [...]

The Things I Do For A Book

So, I’m crazy about books. I recently realized that I needed a specific book for my MA thesis and decided that, due to it being a classic in theology, I should purchase it. I scoured every possible large bookseller only to find that the book is out of print so I scoured smaller sellers for good used copies. Thanks to a small seller, through Amazon, I found a very good former library copy of the book. I’m as happy as [...]
