Roma Downey on Being Catholic

Sally Quinn, of the Washington Post, recently sat down with Roma Downey to discuss the actress’s faith life. Downey, a devout Catholic, recently released a new educational DVD series for preschoolers called Little Angels. The series follows twins Alex and Zoe as they learned about the alphabet, animals, and important values. According to the press release: LITTLE ANGELS is an animated DVD series created exclusively for preschool-aged children to teach not only practical learning skills, like ABCs and 1,2,3s, but [...]

Book Review: Jerusalem, Jerusalem by James Carroll

Jerusalem, Jerusalem by James Carroll (432 pages, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2011) There’s nothing I appreciate more than a non-fiction author who tells his audience what drove him to write a particular title. James Carroll is an author I appreciate, because he tells his readers that his perspective on the city of Jerusalem comes from his own quest to find meaning in a tradition he once served as a priest. Jerusalem, Jerusalem is a book that attempts to explain how the [...]

Farewell, 2010! It’s Been Quite a Year

Here we are at the end of another year. Was it just me or did this year happen to fly by? It’s been quite a year, indeed. Overall, 2010 was a good year for me. It wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t stellar, but it was good and I’m thankful. I’ll remember 2010 as a year of life-changing decisions, surprises, and growth. As I look back on they year, here’s a Top 5 list of what will be most memorable: 1. Master [...]

‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime (The Huron Carol)

Recently, I was thinking of my favorite Christmas carols. I realized that I have many favorites and there is no way I can choose a top five (though I can say with certainty that “O’ Holy Night” is my all-time favorite). There is one Christmas carol that takes me back to my childhood. I was in 2nd grade and loved to sing so my parents bought me a big caroling book that came with a cassette I could sing a [...]

Literacy Today

I read a sobering statistic earlier this week that revealed that 1 in 20 young people have never read a book. The survey was conducted by Reader’s Digest and, while it isn’t scientific and seems a bit lacking in areas, it is still a result that saddens me. The results sadden me, but don’t surprise me. The United States has made science and mathematics the primary concern for our educational system and for parents. If this nation desires to remain [...]

Back-to-School Memories

September always brings back memories of character lunchboxes, 64-color boxes of crayons, pink erasers, and Catholic school uniforms. A recent trip to the local Target took me to the back-to-school section. Parents with school supply lists of required materials and kids with their own ideas of what was needed for school crowded the already crowded section. Spiral wide-ruled notebooks and glue sticks litters the aisles–remainders of a $0.99 school supply sale and last-minute shopping. While observing the parents and their [...]

A Jesuit Olive?

Did the post title catch your interest? If it did, I should probably tell you up front that there is no such thing as a Jesuit olive. There is, however, an olive that knows plenty about Jesuit history, particularly that of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Check it out! This creative, fun, engaging, and educational video was written, produced, and narrated by Jason Kapell of the Fairfield University Media Center. I think it is fantastic!

There’s Something About Purging

No, this won’t be a post about the newest method for colon cleansing and, by no means, will I advocate purging as a means of losing weight–physical weight, at least. Merriam-Webster provides several definitions for “purging”, each of which “works” for what I will discuss. Last night, during the Miss Universe pageant, Miss Philippines was asked to describe what her biggest mistake in life had been. She answered with a smile saying that she had not committed a major mistake [...]

Harold B. Lee Library “Spices” It Up

Old Spice parody for the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU. I’ve never been good about studying at libraries. This is great…I’m still laughing.
